Berlin is a wonderful city that is bursting with cultural delights and rich in history. Soak up the extraordinary atmosphere of this unique city with a luxury London to Berlin trip on board the legendary Venice-Simplon Orient Express and you’ll see with your own eyes what this fascinating and intriguing city has to offer.
With numerous art galleries, historical sites, museums, sophisticated shopping and world class restaurants quite literally on the doorstep the difficulty really will be what to see and do first.
Let us start with perhaps one of the most historically important and famous landmarks in Berlin- the iconic Brandenberg Gate. Located in the west of the city and erected between 1788 and 1791, the Brandenburg Gate once symbolised the divided city, however during more recent times since the fall of the Berlin Wall, it is now seen as a symbol of European unity and peace.
Just a few minutes walk from the Brandenburg Gate is the famous Reichstag building. This historic building is the seat of the constitutional and legislative body of Germany, the Bundestag.
Walk around the dome and enjoy incredible panoramic views of the city. With stunning architecture and a free audio guide as you walk around the building a visit here comes highly recommended. On the roof terrace of the Reichstag building incredibly there is a restaurant serving modern German cuisine.
A top tip is to book tickets for the Reichstag online in advance, entrance is free but for security reasons you do have to register first.
If you’re a self-confessed culture vulture then a trip to Museum Island would be high on the list.
A unique ensemble of five museums and classed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, no wonder one million people a year visit this hub of history & art.
Located on an island along the River Spree in the district of Mitte, this really is a must see attraction.
If you’re interested in sporting history, a visit to the Olymplastadion will not disappoint, or for those looking to understand more about the darker past of Berlin & Germany you may like to pay your respects at the Berlin Holocaust museum.
For the more adventurous types why not explore this dynamic city by bicycle? A bike tour is a great way to take in more of the sights such as the Berlin Wall, Checkpoint Charlie and Berlin’s largest square the Alexanderplatz.
Berlin is a very safe and easy city to get those legs pedalling even for those who haven’t ridden a bike in a long time.
If you’re ready for something altogether more leisurely, take in the beautiful surroundings of the Tiergarten – the Berlin equivalent of Hyde Park with its beautiful gardens, ponds and monuments. Or relax by the river and read a book alongside one of the locals.
After seeing some of the sights why not splash some cash in many of the boutiques and department stores the city has to offer.
If the idea of all that shopping makes you hungry then sample one of the vast arrays of eateries. Why not try some local cuisine such as the Bouletten meatballs or famous currywurst. Or perhaps dine at one of the many Michelin-starred restaurants the city has to offer.
Sample a cocktail at the stylish classic Newton Bar (the Metroplolis Berlin cocktail is delicious!) or try a traditional German beer beautifully complimented by authentic Berlin pretzels…
The city has an eclectic mix of new and old and so there really is something for everyone, and discovering this European hub of culture either by incorporating a journey aboard the world famous Venice Simplon Orient Express or simply via first class rail will certainly be a memory to cherish for a lifetime.
