Day 1 – London to Montreux
As soon as you set foot in beautifully restored St Pancras International station let the holiday mood take over. Take the time to admire the stunning glass roof before you board the Eurostar service to Paris. As you speed towards continental Europe in the comfort of Eurostar’s Standard Premier service relax and enjoy the light meal and drinks before your arrival at the Gare du Nord. Here a private taxi transfer takes you across Paris to the Gare de Lyon. You then join the TGV (train à grande vitesse) as you head south to Lausanne.
Relax in the comfort of your seat while your train takes you into Switzerland. Here you change trains and continue alongside sparkling Lake Geneva to the elegant lakeside town of Montreux. You arrive in time for dinner and a 3 night stay at the Grand Hotel Suisse Majestic (4 star superior), perfectly situated a few steps from the station and with fabulous views of the lake.
Days 2 and 3 – Montreux Christmas Market and Château de Chillon Medieval Christmas Market, Gruyères and Swiss Mountain railways (payable locally)
Montreux’s charming market sits cosily alongside the stunning backdrop of Lake Geneva and tempts visitors with handmade crafts from local artisans. Choose whether to enjoy the market in daylight or under twinkling evening lights whilst you warm yourself with a glass of mulled wine. Stretch your legs or board the trolley bus for the short journey to the stunning medieval Château de Chillon. In this dramatic setting the Medieval Christmas Market will transport you to the distant past. As you marvel at the spectacular setting, twixt sparkling lake and breathtaking mountains, spare a thought for the prisoners of this 13th century castle, considered to be one of the best-preserved in Europe.
Whilst staying in Montreux why not make the most of the marvellous Swiss mountain trains and take the rack railway up Rochers-de-Naye for stupendous views and a chance to visit the ‘Marmot Paradise’? You might fancy a trip into the mountains to Gruyères to discover more about how this distinctive cheese is made or a visit to the spectacular Glacier on the fabulous mountain train via Aigle to Les Diablerets.
Day 4 – Montreux to London
Walk across to the station and continue to Lausanne to board the TGV to whisk you back to Paris. Watch the rolling hills flash past or reminisce on the wonders of the past few days.
Your private transfer takes you to the Gare du Nord and the last leg of your journey. Let the train take the strain as you stretch out and savour the light meal and drinks included in your Standard Premier service. At 186mph the landscape is a blur at times, though memories abide as you return to London St.Pancras International.
