The mighty Rhine is one of Europe’s most important and attractive waterways.  This fabulous cruise passes through the picturesque Rhine Gorge, makes a detour along the picturesque Moselle and visits traditional winegrowing villages along the riverbank.

Dates: Late March to October 2020 and 2021

This 7 night / 8 day cruise holiday includes First Class rail (Standard Premier Class on Eurostar) from London to Amsterdam and from Basel to London includes full board accommodation on board the Amadeus Silver III, plus a private taxi transfer in Paris. Day 1 – London to Amsterdam

Your holiday begins as you arrive at London St. Pancras International Station; take the time to admire the stunning glass roof. Then sit back, relax and watch the countryside glide past as you travel by Eurostar to Brussels at speeds of up to 186mph.  Enjoy your at seat meal and drinks as the landscape changes before you.  On arrival at Brussels you change trains and take the high speed Thalys service to Amsterdam.  Upon arrival in this cosmopolitan city you make your own way to your floating hotel for the next 7 nights, recently launched Amadeus Silver III.  You will have time to settle in to your new surroundings before you meet with the crew and fellow guests over a welcome cocktail before dinner.

Day 2 – Amsterdam – Hoorn

This morning you may wish to stay on board, relaxing and enjoying the passing scenery as you cruise towards Hoorn.  Alternatively you may prefer to join an excursion to discover the delights of Amsterdam and North Holland.  Your guided tour of this vibrant city will begin by coach and you will see the Royal Palace, numerous canals and the Museum Quarter.  The centre of Amsterdam is made up of 90 islands, linked by 400 bridges spanning a network of canals.   A canal cruise allows you to see the city from a perspective.  After your canal cruise you drive through the landscape of polders to the old fishing village of Volendam.   Take a stroll through the village and see people still dressed in traditional costumes.  Before you rejoin the ship you will be taken to a local cheese farm where you will sample some Dutch cheese and discover how it is made.

Day 3 – Cologne

This morning as your ship continues its journey from the Netherlands to Germany, you can make use of the ship’s facilities or relax and watch the world go by.  This afternoon the Amadeus Silver III arrives in Cologne, which boasts the most visited landmark in Germany – it’s magnificent twin-spired cathedral, which you will see from afar as your ship sails into the city.  The city’s main sights are within reach of your mooring so you can explore at your own pace, or you may like to take a guided walking tour of the narrow, cobbled streets of the Old Town with a local guide.   Whilst in Cologne be sure to sample the local Kôlsch beer for which Cologne is known.

Day 4 – Cochem


Today your ship leaves the Rhine behind and takes a special trip down the Moselle, a tributary of the Rhine but no less attractive.   The scenery of the romantic Moselle is epitomised by vineyards and riverside towns with half timbered houses, winding streets and medieval town gates.  The Amadeus Silver Moors in Cochem this afternoon and you can choose to explore independently or join a guided walking tour. During the course of the tour you will visit the Reichsburg Castle, which dominates the town from its strategic location, on a precipitous rock above the town.  From here the views of the town, the Moselle and the surrounding vineyards are impressive.  No visit to the area would be complete without sampling the local Moselle wines and the wine tasting after your tour will give you the chance to do just that.

Day 5 – Koblenz – RüdesheimRüdesheim

This morning you arrive in Koblenz, ideally situated at the confluence of the Rhine and the Moselle rivers.  The town dates back over 2,000 years and has a rich and varied history.   You may take a guided walking tour to explore the most important sights of this attractive town, including the Schängel Fountain at the town hall and the Emperor Wilhelm Memorial at the famous German Corner. This afternoon is surely one of the scenic highlights of this cruise.  Make sure you are on deck or near one of the panoramic windows as your ship sails through the most beautiful section of this river – the legendary Upper Middle Rhine Valley – where fairy-tale castles perch high above the river.  Later this afternoon you arrive in Rudesheim, a town with a rich history of winemaking, nestled in the Rhine Gorge.  A tour of the town includes a ride on the unique Winzerexpress train to the Mechanical Music Museum for a musical adventure with historical self-playing instruments.  Afterwards your tour leads you through the picturesque town and down the Drosselgasse – where wine taverns invite you to linger before you head back to your ship.

Day 6 – Mannheim – Speyer


Your ship anchors in the bustling city of Mannheim this morning. You may explore at leisure or join an excursion by coach to Heidelberg, known world-wide for its University and its associations with the Romantic Movement.  This delightful town has a well preserved baroque Old Town and ruins of a red sandstone castle, which overlooks the town.  Your tour starts with a visit to the castle and from its Grand Terrace you will have a wonderful view of the town and the River Neckar.  You will then continue with a stroll through the enchanting old town to see the Karl-Theodor Bridge, the late-gothic Church of the Holy Spirit and the town hall. This afternoon your ship arrives in Speyer, where you can join a waking tour which takes in the impressive facades of various styles, the winding alleys and the romantic squares which characterise the town. This evening the Captain’s Gala Dinner is a wonderful finish to a fantastic day.

Day 7 – Strasbourg



This morning your ship arrives in capital of Alsace, Strasbourg This beautiful city’s sights include the famous cathedral and the Petite France quarter, where pretty canals are lined with half-timbered houses.  Much of the city centre is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and you have the opportunity to see its principal attractions on a guided tour by coach, canal boat and on foot.  This afternoon Amadeus Silver III sets sails towards Switzerland, her final destination, so you can relax in the Panorama Lounge or on deck and take in the passing scenery for one last time.

Day 8 – Basel & homeward bound


After breakfast this morning, you disembark from your ship and make your own way to Basel railway station.   Here you join the high speed TGV for your journey back through Eastern France and to Paris.  On arrival at the Gare de Lyon in Paris your private taxi transfers you to the Gare du Nord station where you board your Eurostar service to London. Take your seat and relax as your train transports you through the changing scenery of Northern France and then Kent.  Take time to reflect on the magnificent sights, sounds and tastes which you have enjoyed on your river cruise as you enjoy a light meal and drinks before your arrival into London St Pancras, and your onward journey home.

Amadeus Silver III

Launched in 2016, the Amadeus Silver III combines innovative design and state of the art facilities with first class service to make your stay on board memorable.  Most staterooms feature French balconies and all have en-suite facilities with amenities such as flat screen television, individual climate control, hairdryer, telephone, safe and bottled water.  This new cruise ship features 72 staterooms and 12 suites with a maximum of 168 passengers. Enjoy entertainment in the Panorama Lounge and Bar, deck games on the sun deck or relax and unwind in the Amadeus Club.  Amadeus Silver III also features the Café Vienna, serving Viennese specialties and a glass shielded “river terrace”, plus a fitness room, hair salon and massage room.  There is a small gift ship and the ship benefits from a lift between some decks.   There are 20 bicycles on board giving you the opportunity to explore the riverside paths or meander through the streets of the riverside towns you visit. Wi-Fi is available on board ship.  All meals are included on board: buffet breakfast and multi-course lunch and dinner with menu choices, plus afternoon tea and midnight snack.   Lunch and dinner are accompanied by wine, beer and soft drinks.  A 24 hour tea and coffee station is available in the Panorama Lounge.
