What’s the Venice Simplon Orient Express like?
Travelling on the Venice Simplon Orient Express offers a unique travel experience; your personal steward is on hand to attend to your every comfort and show you to your exquisite compartment of wooden marquetry and polished brass adornments in original 1920s art-deco detail, with soft towels and pristine linen.
Experience fine dining in one of the ornate restaurant cars where crisp, white linen, polished French silverware and heavy crystal create a marvellous setting and backdrop for your gourmet meals.
All the while, you travel across Europe viewing magnificent scenery and ever-changing landscapes from the comfort of this luxurious, iconic train.
Day 1 – London to Switzerland by First Class rail
Let the holiday mood take over as you enter magnificent London St. Pancras International station and board your Eurostar service for Paris. Sit back in the comfort of your Standard Premier Class (Eurostar’s 1st Class for leisure travellers) seat and enjoy your included light meal and drinks.
On arrival at the Gare du Nord you will be greeted by a private taxi to take you across cosmopolitan Paris. At the Gare de Lyon you will board the high speed TGV to travel in First Class through France before approaching the breath-taking Alps and the shores of Lake Geneva.
Montreux awaits and a luxurious night at the belle époque Grand Hotel Suisse Majestic (4 star superior), conveniently situated right next to the station.
At this point we would suggest that, if your schedule permits, you add an extra night at the Grand Hotel Suisse Majestic in Montreux from £120 per person, allowing you more time to take in the breath-taking views, perhaps visit the nearby Chateau de Chillon or enjoy a glass of wine from the hotel’s terrace which overlooks sparkling Lake Geneva.
Day 2 – Through the Swiss Alps to Venice by First Class rail
This morning after breakfast make your way across to the station. Here you board the Euro City train as it snakes its way through picturesque scenery, past soaring mountain peaks, up the spectacular Rhône Valley into Italy. You pass Milan and continue to Venice. On arrival at Venezia Santa Lucia station walk out of the station and enter a different world. Your water taxi will be waiting to whisk you to your hotel for the next three nights, the wonderful Hotel Ai Mori d’Oriente (4 star) in Venice, one of the most famous hotels in Venice.
Day 3-4 – Explore the Unique Beauty of Venice
Over breakfast this morning enjoy planning the sights you wish to take in whilst in Venice. You then have a full day to explore this captivating city at your leisure. You may wish to visit the impressive Piazza San Marco to see the famous Basilica-dominated square, take a Gondola ride down the Grand Canal or visit the iconic 15th century Santa Maria della Salute church. You may simply like to enjoy an espresso whilst watching the hustle and bustle of this unique city.
Day 5 – the legendary Venice Simplon Orient Express awaits
This morning your water taxi will transport you back to Venice Santa Lucia station where the renowned blue and gold Wagons-Lits carriages of the Venice Simplon Orient Express await to take you on a journey in style and luxury.
Greeted by your own personal steward, who will attend to your every need throughout your journey, you are shown to your private compartment. After you have settled in, you may wish to head to the bar car for an aperitif before enjoying the delicious 3 course lunch served in one of the beautiful restaurant cars.
This afternoon you may choose to browse the Venice Simplon Orient Express’ on board boutique to purchase mementos of your holiday and the iconic train, relax in your compartment and admire passing scenery as the trains makes its way through the Italian Dolomites towards the Brenner Pass and Austria. Afternoon tea is served in your compartment before it is time to dress for dinner.
Perhaps enjoy a glass of champagne in the new Champagne Bar or the bar car and admire the ever-changing scenery, meeting other passengers and sharing stories of your experience before dinner.
Heading to one of the three distinctly different, beautiful restaurant cars, you will be treated to the finest four course meal prepared by talented French chefs. The fine dining experience befits the elegant and luxurious setting aboard the Venice Simplon Orient Express as it continues on its journey through the evening.
After dinner, relax to the sound of music from the baby grand piano in the bar car, or simply enjoy the experience of being aboard what must be the world’s most luxurious express train.
When you return to your compartment, your Steward will have transformed it into a comfortable bedroom ready for a night’s sleep beneath fresh white linen.
Day 6 – Aboard the Venice Simplon Orient Express from Paris to London & homeward bound
When morning arrives you are approaching Paris. You are greeted by the smell of coffee and hot pastries as your Steward brings breakfast to your compartment at a time to suit you. The train pulls into Paris Gare de l’Est and stops here for 40 minutes. Take this opportunity to stretch your legs along the platform and watch the bustling activity; passengers boarding, chefs choosing produce for brunch, Parisians coming and going. Once dressed and refreshed there is time to relax in the comfort of your cabin before a sumptuous brunch is served in one of the charming restaurant cars as the train travels towards Calais.
Before disembarkation, there’s still time to marvel at the French vistas through the window, or head back to the on-board Venice Simplon Orient Express boutique for a last-minute souvenir purchase.
Upon arrival in Calais, you will say farewell to the unique Venice Simplon Orient Express and after crossing the Channel, you join the gleaming cream and umber carriages of the British Pullman for the journey to London.
Afternoon High Tea, accompanied by a glass of champagne, is served to you at your table as you travel through the Kentish countryside. All too soon it is time to prepare to disembark as your train draws into London Victoria station and the final leg of your journey home.
