Friday 28th September – Through the Rhine Gorge to Switzerland by First Class train

Today you head south, leaving Cologne and Germany behind as you journey aboard a Euro City train, along the scenic Rhine Gorge via Basel into Switzerland before your arrival in Chur. Here you change trains and join the regional train for the lovely journey to St. Moritz. On arrival in the early evening the hotel transfer will take you the short distance for your three night stay at the attractive, highly-regarded Hotel Crystal (4 star superior).
Once you have settled into your room dinner will be in your hotel this evening.

Saturday 29th September – A free day to relax or explore…

You may decide to relax and make full use of the excellent facilities at the Crystal Hotel. You have free admission to the Crystal Wellfit with sauna, steam-bath, aromatic showers and a modern equipped fitness centre. There is also the possibility to book massages, body or sunbed treatments, aerobic and fitness lessons (payable locally). You will also your own lift ticket which will enable you to use the cable cars and public transport of the Upper Engadine valley. Alternatively make the most of your included First Class Swiss Pass which entitles you to travel at your leisure on the entire Swiss Travel System (supplements apply on some mountain-top trains and cable cars).
You might simply like to take a stroll around the pretty town of St. Moritz or enjoy one of the local walks amid the spectacular scenery. This evening you are free to choose your restaurant for dinner.

Sunday 30th September – The Bernina Express round trip to Italy

Board the Bernina Express in St. Moritz for fabulous, breathtaking views from your panoramic carriage as you travel over bridges and viaducts, through galleries and switch-back tunnels hewn into the rock, past waterfalls, ravines and rushing mountain streams. The route spirals and loops from the Engadine Valley before climbing more than 7,000ft to the Bernina Pass without the help of a rack-and-pinion mechanism. Marvel at the snow-capped mountains as the train descends into the pretty, Italian town of Tirano with its different cultural feel. There is time to relax and enjoy lunch in one of the town’s cafés or restaurants before the return journey to St. Moritz. You may have time to relax or use the hotel’s excellent facilities before dinner at your hotel this evening.

Monday 1st October – The Glacier Express

Excitement builds this morning as you bid farewell to St. Moritz and travel westwards on board the Glacier Express. Probably the slowest ‘express’ in the world, the narrow-gauge train takes you through the delightful Engadine valley and then climbs out of the pasture and woodland as you leave the broad valley of the Rhine. You continue up the Rhône Valley, past mountain peaks, tiny hamlets, babbling brooks, as your train spirals upwards and snakes its way over the Oberalp Pass at 6,670ft. Lunch on-board the Glacier Express is included for you to enjoy at your First Class seat while you admire the scenery through the panoramic windows. On arrival in Brig you join the Inter Regio train for the onward journey to the elegant lakeside town of Montreux. Your hotel for the next 3 nights is the Grand Hotel Suisse Majestic, perfectly situated a few steps from the station and with fabulous views of the lake. This evening dinner is served at your hotel.

Tuesday 2nd October – Schilthorn and Piz Gloria revolving restaurant and the Golden Panoramic Express

Today you embark on another wonderful highlight of your holiday as you travel through stunning scenery throughout the entire day, culminating at the summit of the Schilthorn. After breakfast you set off from Montreux travelling by train through the Rhône Valley, changing at Visp before heading to the heart of the Bernese Oberland. Then enjoy a spectacular journey around Lake Thun before changing trains as you start your steep ascent to the summit of the Schilthorn. You continue via both Lauterbrunnen and Mürren, using an enticing combination of cogwheel railways, funiculars, and cable cars. There is time at the summit for you to have lunch in the revolving “Piz Gloria” restaurant, which allows you to take in the stunning views. The Schilthorn is also famous for being the setting of the James Bond film “On Her Majesty’s Secret Service” and you might like to watch a short film at the summit showing further details of the making of the film. Your descent then takes you down from the Schilthorn via cable car, before heading to Interlaken through Stechelberg. At Interlaken relax in the comfort of your seat as the Golden Panoramic Express snakes alongside sparkling Lake Thun and climbs to more than 4,000ft above sea level. Enjoy the option of dinner in the restaurant car (payable locally) whilst you gaze at majestic views of the Swiss Alps as you pass through valleys dominated by cattle-farming and cheese-making, past the glamorous resorts of Château d’Oex and Gstaad.
On the last leg of this fabulous journey back to Montreux revel in the breathtaking views of the French Alps as the train makes its spiralling descent towards Lake Geneva. You are free to make your own arrangements for dinner tonight.

Wednesday 3rd October – The Chocolate Train to Broc

Today you board the Chocolate Train on either a pullman, Belle Epoque carriage (circa 1915) or a modern panoramic car for the delightful journey from Montreux on the Swiss Riviera to Gruyères, home to the well-known cheese. Enjoy the complimentary croissants and coffee en route before you travel into this attractive town by coach. Admission to the cheese factory and the stunning castle are included, and there is time for lunch before you transfer by coach to Broc. Here you visit the famous Nestlé chocolate factory where you have the opportunity to sample some of its delights! You then make the scenic journey back to Montreux in time for a final farewell dinner in a local restaurant specialising in regional cuisine.

Thursday 4th October – Montreux to London – Homeward bound

This morning after breakfast you might like to stretch your legs or board the trolley bus for the short journey to the stunning medieval Château de Chillon. As you marvel at the spectacular setting, twixt sparkling lake and breathtaking mountains, spare a thought for the prisoners of this 13th century castle, considered to be one of the best-preserved in Europe. If you are an early-riser why not make the most of your included First Class Swiss Pass and enjoy a lake cruise or make the most of the marvellous Swiss mountain trains and take the rack railway up Rochers-de-Naye for stupendous views and a chance to visit the ‘Marmot Paradise’? Then just before lunchtime you make your way back to Montreux station as you join the Inter Regio train to Lausanne where you change trains and board the TGV Lyria to whisk you back to Paris. Watch the rolling hills flash past or reminisce on the wonders of the past few days as you enjoy your at-seat 3 course meal. Your transfer takes you to the Gare du Nord and the last leg of your journey. Here you join the Eurostar and let the train take the strain as you stretch out and savour the light meal and drinks included in your Standard Premier service. At 186mph the landscape is a blur at times, though memories abide as you return to London St. Pancras International and the final leg of your journey home.

Celebrate Christmas in true style in the magical city of Venice. Treat yourself to the charm and delights of incomparable Venice over the festive season. A short break in this most romantic of cities is the ultimate Christmas gift.

You can tailor make your Christmas and New Year holiday by rail to exciting destinations throughout Europe including Italy, Switzerland, France, Spain, Germany and Austria.

What better way to chase away the winter blues than a holiday to one of Europe’s magical Christmas Markets? Our short breaks by rail include Germany’s oldest Christmas Market in Dresden dating back to 1434. Here the historic Striezelmarkt, with its romantic and festive charm, is an inspiration in itself, a real treasure trove for traditional handmade crafts. In Berlin you can experience the incomparable excitement of “WinterMagic” in the capital city of the German Christmas Markets. Set amidst some of Europe’s most beautiful squares and renowned buildings, with scrumptious treats and pretty fairy lights, are Germany’s largest selection of over 60 markets. Montreux’s charming market sits cosily alongside the stunning backdrop of Lake Geneva and tempts visitors with handmade crafts from local artisans. We also give you the opportunity to explore these fascinating cities and their attractive surrounding areas during the festive season.

The beauty of these Christmas fairs and markets is that they still convey a real traditional Christmas feel and many gifts are not mass-produced, instead they are craftwork of real quality. Each market has its own character, developed over the centuries and built around regional specialities or local customs. Here you can find all kinds of Christmas goodies and presents, especially traditional items such as crib figurines, toys, wood carvings, marionettes, candles and lambskin shoes. Many are difficult to resist – as are the warming glass of delicious mulled wine, the sizzling sausages or hot chestnuts with their evocative aromas that are so welcome on crisp winter days.

Itinerary

Your Outward Journey

Day 1 – By rail to France
Your holiday begins at stunning London St Pancras International station. Sit back, relax and watch the countryside glide past as we travel by Eurostar to Paris at speeds of up to 186mph. Enjoy the complimentary 3-course meal and drinks served on board in Standard Premier Class (formerly 1st class). On arrival at the Gare du Nord we cross Paris by coach and continue our journey by TGV through France to the medieval city of Dijon. Our hotel for dinner and an overnight stay is the Mercure Dijon Clémenceau, situated close to the heart of this historic city. You may have a little time to wander through the attractive old town and admire the half-timbered houses and palaces of the Dukes of Burgundy or browse among the Brocanterie (antique shops).

Day 2 – Through the Alps to Italy
From Dijon we board the TGV and speed towards Switzerland, where we join the Cisalpino tilting train to travel along the shores of Lake Geneva, past terraced vineyards and soaring mountain peaks, up the spectacular Rhône Valley into Italy. We continue past Milan to Desenzano, and a short coach transfer to Salo on the south-western shores of Lake Garda, arriving in the evening for a seven-night stay at the attractive Hotel Salo du Parc.

Lake Garda, Venice and the Dolomites

Day 3 – Lake Garda Cruise
The ideal way to enjoy Lake Garda at its best is on a relaxing lake cruise. We travel along virtually the entire length of the lake, marvelling at the cliffs that rise almost vertically from the lake shore and admiring the fabulous views of the picturesque villages nestled between the mountains and lakeside. We arrive in Malcesine, arguably the most attractive town on the lake, with its medieval castle, maze of cobbled streets and backdrop of Monte Baldo towering above. Enjoy the opportunity to stroll around this pretty town before we head south to Lazise and Sirmione, situated on a narrow promontory in the southern waters of the lake. There you can explore Sirmione’s narrow, medieval streets and perhaps visit the 13th century Rocca Scaligera Castle or the Grotte di Catullo, the impressive remains of the largest Roman villa in Italy. We end this marvellous day on a real high with a traditional meal with locally produced wine at a local co-operative, idyllically set amongst vineyards.

Day 4 – Venice by train
A much anticipated journey today by train to the incomparable city of Venice. On arrival Venice Santa Lucia station we enter immediately into a different world, greeted by the sights and sounds of the Grand Canal as we make a short orientation tour by boat, along the Giudecca Canal to St Mark’s Square. A short walking tour takes in some of Venice’s many highlights, including the Basilica of St. Mark’s and the Bridge of Sighs. You then have plenty of free time to discover the delights of this magical city for yourselves before we return to Lake Garda by train.

Day 5 – A leisurely day in Salo
Allow yourself to unwind and soak up the unique atmosphere of Lake Garda and the pretty town of Salo. Wend your way along the narrow streets and picturesque waterfront or hop on a ferry to discover more of Italy’s largest lake.

Day 6 – The Dolomites, Bolzano & Renon Historical Railway
Departing after breakfast, we take a coach journey northwards to the Tyrolean region of Italy, traveling through the heart of the Dolomites to Bolzano. This lovely mountain town has a distinct Austrian flavour and, after a guided tour, we have some free time to browse. We then join the Renon Historical Railway for a spectacular trip across the Renon Plateau and view the ‘Erdpyramids’ – a unique rock formation in the Dolomites. We return by coach to our hotel where we enjoy dinner.

Day 7 – Excursion to Verona
Just 45 minutes away by coach is Verona, a charming walled city of Roman origin and the setting for Shakespeare’s ‘Romeo and Juliet’. During our visit we enjoy a guided tour by coach and on foot through the city’s narrow streets, which are lined with beautiful medieval buildings and Roman monuments. Our evening is spent enjoying a candlelit dinner together, with entertainment at the hotel.

Day 8 – A free day for discovery
Spend today at your leisure, possibly relaxing in Salo or exploring a nearby resort. Alternatively take the train to stylish Milan this morning and explore Italy’s fashion capital. There are many sights to enjoy in Italy’s largest city including the magnificent Duomo, the world-renowned opera house ‘Teatro alla Scala’ and the incredible 19th century glass-roofed shopping arcade, the Galleria Vittorio Emanuel. You may even have the opportunity to visit the famous church and cloister of Santa Maria della Grazie, where Leonardo da Vinci’s painting ‘The Last Supper’ can be seen.

Homeward Bound

Day 9 – Through Switzerland to Germany
We transfer to Milan and join the InterCity service for the journey over the St. Gotthard Pass, into Switzerland. In Zurich we change services and join the train to Cologne. Here we spend one night at the Four Points Hotel, conveniently located opposite the station and close to the cathedral.

Day 10 – ICE and Eurostar to London
We depart Cologne and travel by Thalys fast-speed train to Brussels. Here we join our connection with Eurostar to London. After a meal and drinks served at our seat we arrive into St Pancras late afternoon.
